Event History

DARE is a unique collaboration between Opera North and the University of Leeds, the first partnership of its kind in the UK. Now celebrating its 10th anniversary DARE is a world leader in building connections between the arts and higher education by fusing the artistic with the academic in order to combine the very best of both organizations to stimulate and inspire new ways of thinking and working.

Visual Artists in All Media are Eligible

The DARE Prize will go to an innovative, ambitious, early-career artist who is excited and energized by the opportunity to work with leading scientific researchers at the University of Leeds.  The new £15,000 prize is intended to challenge artists and scientists to work collaboratively on new approaches to the creative process. The successful applicant will be paired with a researcher at the University who shares their vision and can bring additional knowledge and expertise to support the creation of something new. The proposed project must be be something that can be realized within twelve months. The artist is expected to allocate around £5,000 of the Award to the creation of new work.

The winning artist will be announced in the spring of 2017.  The work created by the year-long partnership between the artist and the reasearcher will be revealed in March 2018. 

Artists working in all disciplines are invited to apply. Artists need to submit a CV and a 500-word proposal that summarises the area of scientific interest - from microbiology to nutrition to astrophysics to climate change, etc. The proposal must express an ambition to create something new and the germ of an idea of what this might be. The artists must also posesses a genuine desire to engage with academic researchers, the expertise and resources at the University of Leeds. Additionally, access to resources, musicians and studio space from Opera North may also be available. 

Applicants must send in the form to Lesley Patrick, Partnerships Director at DARE: lesley@dareyou.org.uk, before the deadline of 5 December 2016. From the pool of applicants a shortlist of interviews will take place in the week commencing 9 January 2017. The recipient of the award will be announced in the week commencing 7 February.
