Event History

The 1st Tao Hua Tan International Artist Retreat and Residence took place in October of 2017. Forty Chinese and international artists participated (see www.taohuatanart.com). The October residency is a yearly manifestation. We are organizing a small visual artists residence open to only 8 international artists to celebrate the Spring festival and the China National Poetry Festival, taking place in May in Taohuatan.

Following the overwhelming success of the October 2017 residence, we are hosting a small scale residence in order to celebrate the Spring Festival and China National Poetry Festival. This residency is open to only eight international artists.

Participating artists will be selected by the organizer’s curators who include: Jeffrey Spalding, an independent curator Vancouver, BC, Canada; Gordan Novak, who is the owner of Novak Graphics Inc. printmaking studio and publisher from Admiral, Saskatchewan, Canada; Liu Jian, artist, art consultant and curator from Toronto, Canada and Beijing China; or proposed by the art-world professionals (art critics, galleries, museum curators, university lecturers...).

Invited applicants are free to choose the subject, technique and style of their work. Canvases, oil and acrylic paints, as well as any special materials that are requested by the artists will be provided free of charge by the organizers. The organizers will also cover all the expenses for full board and lodging including visits to selected historic, natural and cultural sites. Invited artists will only pay the transportation costs from their city/country to Shanghai, China and back.

The organizers will meet the artists at meeting points in Shanghai and transport them by minibus to the resort. The resort is a 5-star hotel. The residency ends with an exhibition of the works produced in Tao Hua Tan and an »open day« reception for the press, critics, collectors, gallerists and the general public. The opening will take place during the ceremonies of China National Poetry Festival taking place at the same resort. The catalog book of the residency will be produced by the organizers.
