Call for Artists

The Kalorama Park Land Artwork will be a large-scale, site-specific work, that creates a unique and remarkable destination for local residents and visitors to ngurrak barring. This will be a major public art commission, located close to the highest point of the Dandenong Ranges, and will create an iconic marker for the area, viewable from a range of distances and perspectives.

The Artwork will complement the form and character of the site and its surroundings and convey a concept that is deeply considered and reflective of the environment and cultural and historical context of the immediate area and/or the wider Dandenong Ranges.

As a Land artwork, it needs to be integrated with the landscape and must be made using natural or mostly natural materials. It should reflect the ngurrak barring (also referred to as RidgeWalk) Vision, particularly by being environmentally responsive.

Background

Occurring across 39 kilometres of walking track, ngurrak barring invites us to explore the natural wonders, rich histories and cultural offerings of the region. The track leads through forests of towering mountain ash and rich understoreys, passes through townships and emerges to panoramic views of Melbourne. Public art, architectural nodes, heritage interpretation and digital platforms, as well as a program of temporary exhibitions and performances will be discovered across the track.

Some of Australia’s most significant artists, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, have drawn inspiration from the Dandenong Ranges, and the region continues to thrive as a creative hub. Ngurrak barring examines the human relationship to place, from First Nations people’s connection to Country, to shared contemporary experiences.

Ngurrak barring is one of the three Ridges and Rivers projects, including the Yarra Valley Trail and the Warburton Mountain Bike Destination.
