Event History
MASS has run the Hotbox residency since 2013.
What Makes this event different?
MASS provides a studio space furnished with a worktable and chair, continual access to the studio, ac, wireless Internet, Austin-area resources via MASS connections, and an honorarium of $800. MASS does not offer any production workshops of any kind, but, if necessary, can assist the artist in finding available options to satisfy specific project needs and/or other desired resident activities.
ARTIST RESIDENCY APPLICATIONS CLOSE JUNE 21, 2017
The Hotbox residency program is open to all artists working in any medium and any stage in their career.
For one month of the summer MASS’s Hotbox residency program transforms the gallery space into a working studio. This art residency program opens the space to artists who are interested in participating in self-directed residencies in Austin, TX. Up to two individual residency spots are available every summer for a 4-week period. The length of each residency is determined by the interests of each artist with a maximum of 4 weeks in total. Applicants can be at any stage of their career, but MASS is especially interested in nurturing projects that could not be realized otherwise. MASS’s goal with the residency is to provide our gallery as studio space, give artists the opportunity to explore new practices or ideas, and allow the participating artists to engage with the Austin community. Due to space limitations, applications from groups or collectives are not accepted.
Each Hotbox art resident is obliged to participate in MASS’s public engagement series, Close Encounters. Close Encounters is designed to provide new methods of engaging the public’s curiosity. Open and broad, this prompt can be approached from a multitude of ways: passive, performative or completely radical in execution or thought. This program is a challenge to the artist, as well as the audience, and it is designed to provide a new way of encountering and understanding the creative process. All Close Encounters activities will be discussed on a case-by-case basis and will only take place if both parties reach an agreement.
Each resident is financially responsible for transportation costs to and from Austin as well as for living expenses, housing, local transportation, production costs and any additional materials.
If needed, MASS can extend invitation letters to assist selected residents to apply for additional funding or/and travel requirements.
